Daniel Deronda is a British television serial drama adapted by Andrew Davies from the 1876 George Eliot novel of the same name.It was directed by Tom Hooper, produced by Louis Marks, and was first broadcast in three parts on BBC One from 23 November to 7 December 2002. While ostensibly the story of one Daniel Deronda, a young man of (we learn) unknown parentage, raised to be an educated Englishman of worth and standing, this novel is also the tale of Gwendolen Harleth, and how their lives intersect. I well remember seeing this serial version of Daniel Deronda in the old days of black and white TV. The character played by Robert Hardy was so well realised; he really seemed an unbearable person, unlike in the later version when he was merely unpleasant.
